Known for their rustic country charms, Tongsiao and Yuanli are coastal townships famous for whole some humanities, festive pilgrimage ceremonies, distinct rush cultures, and rich tidal zone ecosystem.
Tongxiao is among the earliest seaside town in Taiwan. When the Tongxiao River was still wide and deep, merchants would come here by boat. Business activities were so frequent that this little town was named “Tongxiao,” meaning “open day and night.” It is also known as a “small Iran” in Taiwan because it produces 80% of the nation’s gas.
Yuanli is world famous for its sedge weaving products, such as mats and hats. Because this is among the earliest developed areas in Miaoli, many historic three-section compounds built with mud and stones can be found. Blessed with mild climate, sufficient workforce and a great location, Yuanli is also an agricultural and traffic hub.
