Located in Kaikuang Village in Gongguan, Chuhuangkeng is Taiwan’s oldest and most important petroleum mine. The petroleum was first discovered in 1813 at a spot about 80 meters on the right of the mine’s present gate - the spot is known as Chuhuangkeng Oil Well No.1. The Japanese who excavated the site at the time thought what came out was sulfur, not petroleum. Thus, they named the spot “Chuhuangkeng,” meaning “a pit which produces sulfur.”
The anticline here consists of hard sandstone and soft shale - ideal for doing geological research.
On the mine’s left is a farm. The scenery at night is extremely graceful. Thus, the area is also hailed as “little Hong Kong.”
Chuhuangkeng Mine was reinaugurated on June 15, 2019, with a high-tech VR zone that shows the mine’s past, present, and future.
