Early summer in Miaoli County is the peak production period for delicious Makino bamboo shoots, followed by the season for local plums. The Indigenous Peoples and Ethnic Group Development Department of Miaoli County Government launched “Lokah! Traveling to the Tribe and Pick Plums Experience Event” with “Tribal Ruby” as its theme which allows tourists to experience the five senses by hand-picking fresh plums. It also combines on-site visits to secret tribal areas, sharing hand-made experiences and food tasting to better understand the tribe's culture, lifestyle and habitat, as well as unforgettable and beautiful memories in the mountains and forests.
The department points out that although tourists cannot visit orchards to pick in person they can still pick fresh plums to buy using their sharp eyes. The secret is the white fruit powder on the fresh fruit, as the fresher the fruit the thicker the powder and the more the number of storage days, the more the fruit powder diminishes. In addition to eating fresh plums directly, the picked plums can also be kept and softened, with the seeds removed, and combined with ice cubes to make plum sorbet. The sweet and sour flavor is very refreshing in summer, or plums can be used to make homemade plum jam to spread on toast as a snack or mixed into a delicious drink.
