Dragon Bombing, also known as Pong-liùng in the Hakka language, is a unique Lantern Festival event exclusive to the Hakka villages of Miaoli, where dragon dances are performed while firecrackers are set off. This symbolizes “warding off evil spirits and welcoming blessings,” and reflects the belief that “the closer you get to the fire, the more prosperous you become.”
The 2025 Miaoli Dragon Bombing series of events kicked off with the Dragon Bombing on February 8 at 6 p.m. in front of Miaoli Yuqing Temple. A total of 33 performance groups from both Taiwan and abroad, as well as local Miaoli teams, made their way along Yuqing Road to Maolimiao Family Park. Enthusiastic crowds lined the streets, applauding and cheering on each performance team, creating an energetic and lively carnival atmosphere.
This year's international lineup was especially diverse. Japanese creative magician Nao Izuma Murata captivated audiences as she performed along the route in a kimono. Meanwhile, Korean circus artist KIM led a group dressed as characters from "Squid Game." The event also featured an international student dragon dance team from Rotary International, bringing together members from 14 different countries. The J. Andes Group ensemble and the Manjago Africa Drum Group further added rich multicultural flair to the event.
Visitors enjoyed exploring Miaoli during the day and joining the festivities in the evening for a truly exhilarating experience.
