A colorful, auspicious mask named “Gods of Wealth from the Five Roads” can be found at the entrance of Shanbanqiao Mask & Cultural Park. In the mask museum, there is a display on Sanyi’s history and culture, a wooden mask exhibition, and a DIY zone.
The museum directors, a husband and a wife, used to run a wood carving studio, which produced useful everyday goods such as two-dimensional wood sculptures, screens, tables, chairs, and tea plates. The wood carving industry declined, however, due to social changes, and the couple decided to turn the studio into a farm that holds wood carving classes. Since they are strongly interested in Chinese opera masks, they tried to teach basic carving techniques based on such masks. However, the sharp carving knives can be dangerous to beginners, and thus they came up with mask painting events afterwards. Today, Shanbanqiao demonstrates mask art and families with children are welcome to make colorful masks here.
