Chuhuangkeng in Gongguan Township, Miaoli County is Asia’s first oil well and the world’s second. Its industrial past makes it worth some exploration. The old mining facilities including cable cars, as well as workers’ dormitories, are precious legacy. In 2007, the county government listed Chuhuangkeng as its first cultural scenic area.
A rejuvenation project is now in place, and cultural, historical, and technological plans are being carried out. All work is scheduled for completion by end of next year. The county government aims to present the charming, oldest oil well of Asia to the public soon, making it a new popular tourist destination.
