In a quiet corner of Shitan Valley in Miaoli, there was a field. Once, it was grown with rice. But in the late 1970s, in accordance with the government’s policies, mulberry trees were grown instead. The farm owner started breeding silkworms in a professional way. From making silk out of round cocoons to making the worms produce silk on surfaces, the farm owner continued to refine skills. In 1991, the government adjusted policies again and announced that the silkworm industry would be deserted. No one would purchase silk anymore now, but the farm owner insists on preserving precious remains of the industry’s past. Then, Quanming Ecological Silkworm Farm was inaugurated.

The pesticide-free ecological place is home to tens of thousands of silkworms. They eat leaves, make cocoons, and finally transform into moths. In the garden, there are lovely little insects and small animals. At night, fireflies keep visitors company. The visitors may even bump into big Japanese oak silk moths if they are lucky!

Quanming, with more than 20 years of experience in raising silkworms, is the only professional silkworm farm that remains in Taiwan. It is designated by Miaoli County Government as a demonstration site. From growing mulberry trees, raising silkworms, to hand-making silk duvets on flat surfaces, every step is explained in a professional, easy-to-understand and fun way. Visitors can expect to learn about the industry in depth and thoroughly. Come here to learn about the wonderful world of silkworms!
